Agentic Data Science

Coding agents are a new abstraction layer for data science. The work did not disappear; it moved up. Agents can take over data preparation, feature code, proof-of-concept models and tests. The scientist keeps the questions, the causal reasoning, the review and the decision. In Vector 1's model of a data scientist's week, the same agent gives back 11.5 hours to a reviewer who catches 97% of bad steps and costs 3.5 hours when review is weak. The difference is the person directing it.

What we do

  • What to offboard to agents, and what a data scientist must keep
  • Review designs that catch bad agent steps before they compound
  • Team structure and hiring for scientists who direct agents
  • Measuring hours actually saved, not hours that feel saved

Common questions

What is agentic data science?

Data science where AI agents carry out the execution (data preparation, feature code, proof-of-concept models, tests) and the data scientist directs and reviews it, keeping the questions, the causal reasoning and the decisions.

Do AI agents make data scientists faster?

They can, if review is strong. In METR's 2025 randomized trial, experienced developers using AI believed they were 20% faster and were measured 19% slower. Gains depend on what is handed off and how carefully the output is checked.

Do you work with teams outside Kansas City?

Yes. Vector 1 is based in Kansas City and works with teams in the metro and remotely.
